Taikai report from Elaine (1st kyu, brown belt)

We asked Elaine who has joined us recently from Aukland, NZ, for her take on the recent taikai. Here's what she had to say:
Having never been to a Shorinji Kempo taikai event, it had such a good atmosphere. Everyone was really supportive and friendly. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect, the first hour involved some organising and discussion before we got started.
There was a good number of friends and family in the audience and it pretty much felt like a normal training session that was slightly souped-up.
The taikai began with the opening embu performance, the room went silent and everyone watched and enjoyed the performances. It started with the pair form embus, where the peers looked pretty nervous but once they got into their routine, it was fine.
Then the single form began and you could tell these stand alone competitors were even more nervous because they knew the crowds were focused solely on them. The dan-tai embu had some well put together sequences and the shakujo embus just looked really impressive. Randori definitely seemed to be the main event and was very entertaining to watch.
All in all it was a very good and fun day because everyone was in it together and supporting each other.

Taikai success for City Dojo

Well done to everyone who took part in the Taikai last weekend. Great spirit from everyone who took part, and a resounding success for City!

Everyone from the club who took part went home with at least a certificate, and we took the top spots in men's and women's kyu grade randori, women's dan grade randori and kyu grade tan-en (joint with Mayfair). Not to mention, 2nd place in men's dan grade randori, and 2nd place shakujo tan-en.

Check out the proud club members (and our shiny trophies), in the picture.

Bring on next year!

Cyprus Leader's Seminar 2012

Last week, three City regulars, Sensei Rob, Ben and Jonathan attended the annual Leader's Seminar in Limmasol, Cyprus, along with fellow kenshi and friends from London, Bristol, Prague, France and Switzerland. It was an intensive one week course focusing on advanced principles for juho and goho, and also shakujo training. Not to mention great fun catching up with friends old and new, eating as much meze as possible, and taking in the wonderful sun, sea and sights of Cyprus. Many thanks to Mizuno Sensei, Yasue Sensei and Teles for making it possible once again!

More pictures and tales to follow :-)

Free taster class, Monday 30th January

Come along next Monday for a free taster session of Shorinji Kempo. We will be demonstrating a range of elements including group kata, beginner and advanced self defence techniques, sparring and meditation. There will even be a chance to have a go yourself. No experience necessary.

7.30 - 8.30pm, Monday 30th January
Martial Arts Room, Lower Ground Floor,
City University Main Building,
Northampton Square,
London EC1V 0HB

No Friday class for now

Just a reminder that we are down to just the Monday class for the immediate future, now that Hackney Sports Centre is being used as an Olympics practice venue.

We are looking to find a replacement venue around the City/Clerkenwell/Finsbury on Wednesdays or Fridays, so if you know one (or manage one!) send us an email. Until then, no Friday class we're afraid.
