Martial arts classes in Barbican and Hoxton

Learn Shorinji Kempo, a modern Japanese martial art with our classes near City University.

Shorinji Kempo is a balanced system of self defence and martial arts training. Based on ancient Chinese fighting arts and spiritual practices, it teaches cooperation and self development as well as physical self-defence techniques.

So if you want to learn practical self-defence in fun and safe environment, come and join us at any of our regular sessions. Beginners are always welcome.

Can anyone join?

Absolutely! You don't need to have any previous experience of martial arts, and training is suitable for people of all shapes and sizes.

Are there any beginners classes?

Yes, there will be a dedicated beginners class the first Monday of every month. Check the posts for details of the next one.

Kempo? Isn't that the one with the sticks?

We get that a lot, but no, that's kendo. Although there are some advanced techniques for staffs at higher grades.

I'm coming to my first class - what should I bring?

As you'll be doing physical exercise and things tend to get warm, we recommend wearing loose or comfortable sports clothing that you can move easily in.
Apart from that you should bring a bottle of water and remove or tape up any jewellery before you start.

Are you part of a federation?

City University Dojo is a member of the BSKF (an independent federation based in the UK). We are a vibrant community of clubs dotted all round the UK (from Glasgow to Cardiff) as well as London, and we get together regularly for training weekends and social events.

How much does it cost?

Our drop in rates apply at your first class, but if you attend one of our beginners classes, they will also include the first month's insurance too (normally £5). After the month is up, if you'd like to carry on training (we hope so!) you'll need to sign up for BSKF membership for the year, which costs  £50 annually.

Training costs £50 a month (£40 concessions, £25 for City University students), with drop in fees available too (£10 per class, £8 concessions, £5 City students).
